A delegation of the United Kashmiri People’s National Party (UKPNP) met Baroness Emma Nicholson, a Life Member of the House of Lords and Chair of the European Parliament’s Human Rights and Foreign Affairs Committees, in the Committee Room of the House of Lords.
The meeting was facilitated by Jamil Maqsood, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the United Kashmir People’s National Party. London, UK – 10 February 2025 A high-level delegation of the United Kashmiri People’s National Party (UKPNP) met Baroness Emma Nicholson at the House of Lords (UKP) in London on 10 February 2025. The meeting took place in the Committee Room of the House of Lords, where important discussions were held in which the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir was discussed, in particular, emphasizing the need for global support for peace and solidarity in the region. On the one hand, the promises made to the people of the state have been blatantly violated, while on the other hand, conspiracies to permanently divide the state are on the rise. Pakistan and India have not implemented the European Parliament resolution of 2007, but are taking decisions contrary to it. The delegation of the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) was led by Mrs. Faria Atiq, Secretary General of the UKPNP Foreign Affairs Committee. The delegation gave a detailed briefing on the current political and human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and stressed the need for a lasting solution for the rights and peace of the people of the region. In the meeting, the members of the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) requested Baroness Nicholson to support the organization of an international conference to resolve the issue of Jammu and Kashmir so that peace in the region, the solidarity of Jammu and Kashmir, and the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir can be discussed at the global level. The party delegation included a prominent delegation of leaders from the United Kashmiri People’s National Party (UKPNP), who reiterated their support for peace in Kashmir, the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and the promotion of secularism. Baroness Emma Nicholson interacted with the delegation and pledged to stay in touch with them. During the meeting, the UKPNP delegation thanked Baroness Emma Nicholson for her exceptional services in the 2007 European Parliament Report on the Current Situation and Future Outlook in Kashmir. As a Member of the European Parliament and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the United Kashmir People’s National Party played a significant role in the resolution and Baroness Nicholson’s role as a rapporteur was extremely important and key in highlighting the problems of the people of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan at the global level. The delegation appreciated her hard work, her struggle for human rights, and her steadfastness for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. The party is strongly opposed to the use of religion as a political weapon, which is fuelling further sectarianism and extremism in the region. The UKPNP condemns the growing tide of religious extremism and sectarianism, which is undermining peace in the region and the uniqueness and cultural diversity of Jammu and Kashmir. The UKPNP believes that the only solution to the Jammu and Kashmir issue is through international dialogue and the promotion of peace. The meeting with Baroness Nicholson is another important step in the UKPNP’s ability to bring global attention to the Kashmir issue and garner global support for its resolution.
